Java Junkies Athlete of the week Justin Wright

This past week’s Java Junkies male student Athlete of the Week is Sophomore Justin Wright. Last Thursday Wright helped the Tiger cross country team to a second-place finish at the Belleville Invitational. The Sophomore would place sixth with a 5,000-meter time of 18:50.33. Wright has steadily improved throughout the season as he finished 12th at the CCCHS home cross country meet two weeks ago, while he placed 48th at the first cross country meet of the season on a tough cross at Wamego.

Wright would contribute his and the team’s success to the hard work they’ve put in, “We’ve been doing some tough workouts this year as a team and we push each other in practice which helps us improve every week. Our team chemistry has helped us as a team and individually and that comes from us connecting with each other.”

With this year’s team being really young Wright said the upperclassman have held himself and the underclassmen accountable during meets and during the dog days of summer workouts, “They don’t let us slack at practice and make sure we’re on time and don’t let us slack off so we can improve every day. They’ve helped pull the young guys with us and make practice easier to bare.”

The sophomore said that the team's game plan going into Belleville was to try and replicate the success they had at home and that they looked at which teams would be there and what groups to run in.

Wright stated his personal goal for the season is to place at State with the hopes of at least taking 15th there. While his career goal is to be a contender to place at State every year here on out and breaking into the top five medallist at the State meet.

The goal he has set forth for the team is to challenge for a top three finish at state this year. Wright doesn’t just excel at Cross County as he was part of the historic run by the baseball team last spring as he was an integral part of the second place State Tiger baseball team. He also competes in basketball and powerlifting.

Academically Wright excels in the classroom with his favorite classes being math and P.E.

After high school Wright would like to go to college and eventually get into personal training.
