GREEN NEWS (08/20/2021)

Rich Flegle gave the message at Green Methodist Church on August 15. The title was “The Love of

One,” with scripture from 2 Corinthians 13:11. Prayer concerns were for Jarrett Lippert who had surgery

on his feet on Tuesday and is recuperating at home now. Also for the family of former Green resident

Oneita Evans, who passed away at the Leonardville Nursing Home on August 13. Oneita’s obituary can

be found at

The Green Christian School is getting ready to open classes on September 7. Enrollment can be done at

any time by calling the school at 785-944-3324. Plans are continuing for the grand opening celebration

for the new Green City Hall and Museum on September 18. So far the plans for September 18 include a

pancake feed in the morning, ribbon cutting and speech by “Governor Green” at 11:00, and Music in the

Park at 2:00. The Green Cafe will be open for lunch, and people are invited to bring their old cars and

tractors. Vendors are invited to set up downtown.

Today’s photograph is the Branfort Service Station in the 1940’s. The men are Elwood and Ray Branfort

and Ivan Klocke. The little boy is Ron Branfort. Those were the days, when a service station really meant

“service.” When you pulled in Elwood or Ivan came and asked “What’ll you have?” Back then you

probably didn’t say “Fill er up.” Instead you might get $3 or $5 worth of gas. They always washed your

windows and checked your oil, and maybe even checked your tires. Thankfully this station is still open, as

Easterberg Service, even though the gas is self-serve.

Across the street was Kay Hoffman’s Phillips 66 station, and it seems like both stations were busy all the

time. Back in those days, not many people actually drove out of Green to go to work. Most people lived

and worked in Green, and could walk to work.

Artifacts are being gathered for the Green Museum. If you have anything to either donate or loan to our

museum, be sure to get in touch with me. Mark the date, September 18, for the grand opening!
