Living on a nearly isolated farm in the early 30s has no comparison to farm homes that are seen today.  Those farms can be described as isolated because there were only 2 or 3 located on many sections of land and neighbors did not live close.

Our house was two stories and had a large screened porch that wrapped around three sides of the big kitchen.  The reasoning behind that style was to take advantage of having a place to sit where shade trees kept away the hot Kansas sun on at least one side at any hour.  The Kansas wind seemed to be blowing a cooler breeze in the shady area.
