ORONO, Maine (AP) — Police say a University of Maine student drowned on Saturday after jumping off a bridge in Orono.

The 19-year-old jumped into the Stillwater River around 5 p.m. Saturday, according to Orono Police. It's unclear why he jumped.

A passerby swam into the river to help him but was unsuccessful, the Portland Press Herald reports. Rescue crews searched the area and recovered the man's body at about 7 p.m.

Police say they are investigating the death.
