RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a sport utility vehicle slammed into the rear of a construction vehicle on a major highway in northern New Jersey, killing five people, including a 4-year-old boy.

The Bergen County prosecutor's office said the front-loader was returning to a Route 3 construction site after dropping a load at the construction yard shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday in Rutherford, and it was heading west on the highway when it was struck from behind by the SUV.

Prosecutors said 38-year-old Michelle Toledo, 20-year-old Irvina Gee, 23-year-old Sheckylle Chain, and 16-year-old Ayana Navas, all from Paterson, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four-year-old Noah Alexander Dejesus of Allentown was briefly revived at the scene but was pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The fatal accident investigation unit of the prosecutor's office is investigating along with Rutherford police.
