ORANGEVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A state team that searches for fugitives fatally shot a parole absconder Wednesday in western Michigan, authorities said.
The shooting occurred in a rural area in Orangeville Township in Barry County, 40 miles south of Grand Rapids, state police said.
The 41-year-old man was in a vehicle with a woman.
When officers approached, “he produced an edged weapon and it became a hostage situation,” state police said on Twitter.
The man was shot by a state police detective and a Corrections Department agent, state police said. The woman was injured.
