State ranked volleyball wins gold at Riley County

The eighth-ranked CCCHS Lady Tigers competed in the Riley County Volleyball Tournament this past Saturday, Sept. 11, going 5-0 on the day to improve to 9-0 on the season and 2-0 in the NCKL. 

The Lady Tigers opened the morning against the 5A ninth-ranked Great Bend Lady Panthers. Great Bend took the first set against Clay Center edging them out 26-24 in a back-and-forth first set. CCCHS bounced back, winning the second and third sets 25-16, 25-18, picking up their first victory of the day. 

In the second match of the day, Clay Center took on the 2A fifth-ranked 7-2 Jefferson County North Lady Chargers. The Lady Tigers put away their opponents in straight sets 25-13, 25-18 to pick up their second victory of the day. 

Clay Center took on the Lady Bears of St. Mary’s in the last game of pool play. The Lady Tigers took the match in straight sets, defeating St.Mary's 25-21, 25-18. 

In the medal rounds, CCCHS took on the Holton Lady Wildcats, where once again the Lady Tigers vanquished their opponents in straight sets winning the match 25-15, 25-20. 

The Lady Tigers were pitted against the 11-3 Valley Heights Lady Mustangs in the gold medal match, where for the fourth straight game, Clay Center took the match in straight sets 25-13, 25-16 on their way to a first place trophy at the Riley County invitational. 

The undefeated Lady Tigers are on the road again this Saturday, Sept. 18 for the Republic County Invitational in Belleville as the Lady Tigers look to continue the journey back to State.
